Getting to & Around Mauke
The pretty island of Mauke is known for its lovely beaches, excellent caves and cave diving as well as some great fishing opportunities. A short distance from Atiu and Mitiaro, this island is a wonderful destination to spend a few days away from the more touristy regions of the Cook Islands. Laidback and tranquil, visiting Mauke is a great experience.
The best way of getting to Mauke is by plane. Air Rarotonga flies here five days a week from Rarotonga airport. Often combined with a visit to the neighboring islands of Atiu and Mitiaro, it is best to visit Mauke along with these two islands as part of an organized tour. The reason for this is because an organized tour means a reduction in your ticket price.
If you like there are numerous travel agencies in Rarotonga that can arrange an organized tour to Atiu, Mauke and Mitiaro for you. These packages usually include air fare and accommodations expenses as well as transportation costs. This makes touring these islands extremely affordable and economical as well for those traveling on a budget or with a large group of people.
Tourists also have the option of traveling to Mauke by inter-island cargo ship. Mataroa Shipping and Taio Shipping both based in Rarotonga, offer ferry passenger services from Rarotonga to Mauke via Mangaia, Atiu and Mitiaro as well. It is a roughly four day journey by boat. However, the boat stops at each island for half a day only. Since boats are a much cheaper traveling alternative it is vital you book your seats in advance as these ferries are quite small.
On Mauke you can explore the island on foot or rent a motor bike from Tiare Cottages. It is a good idea if you take the help of a local guide when touring the island as many attractions are unmarked and can be easily overlooked.
