Things to do on Mauke
As Mauke is a small island, there are not too many things to do here, however, there are a few activities here you can enjoy. A great activity in Mauke has to be the spelunking in the many limestone caves found in the makatea here. These caves offer some wonderful exploration opportunities with a number of chambers and rooms to explore. Another reason to visit these caves is to enjoy the beautiful cool water pools found here. Great for swimming in, these pools are a clear blue and provide some wonderful opportunities to cool off after spending the morning traversing the densely forested makatea.
While on Mauke a visit to the church here is a must. Known as the ‘Divided Church,’ this church is literally divided down the middle between members of the CICC and the Roman Catholics that live on the island. Initially a wall was built to divide the church; however, it was knocked down after a pastor managed to convince the congregations of both faiths that this was not in the spirit of Christianity. Built in 1882, both halves of the church are elaborately decorated in different styles and each side has its own entrance.
If you are looking for some entertainment on Mauke, Tura’s Bar is the only pub on the island. Open Friday nights, many of the locals gather here for some singing and dancing at the end of the week. A great place to meet the locals and chat with them about their lives, this pub has a warm and friendly atmosphere.
If you like you can also enjoy the local volley ball and soccer games that are held on the island regularly. Played on a ground near the wharf, these games are plenty of fun with each village in Mauke cheering their respective players and teams on.
