Things to do on Cook Islands

Shopipng in Cook Islands

Aside from the plethora of activities found on Cook Islands, there are a number of other ways to keep yourself busy as well. With an excellent nightlife and plenty of entertainment and shopping, Cook Islands offers tourists an amazing wealth of things to do and enjoy.

A must do when on Cook Islands has to be watching an ‘island nights’ performance, which combines dinner with a traditional dance display. Colorful and vibrant, dancers perform traditional ceremonial dances, which were once used to honor the gods. Energetic and lively, these performances are a sight to behold with lots of graceful and elegant movements. Extremely popular and incredibly well executed these tribal dances are superb to watch with Cook Islanders rated as the best dancers in Polynesia.

The food on Cook Islands is also first rate with plenty of fine restaurants on the islands of Rarotonga and Aitutaki. However, one thing that you need to keep in mind is that food here can be quite expensive, the reason being that a lot of the food is usually imported from Australia and New Zealand. But if you are checking out the local cuisine food is usually more cheaper and affordable. A great way to taste the local delicacies is at an ‘island nights’ buffet or at barbeque, where you will be treated to dishes like Eke or octopus, Ika mata (raw fish), Kumara (sweet potato) and Poke (pawpaw).

Some spectator sports worth checking out on the Cook Islands are cricket and rugby, which are played by both the young and the old. A lot of the villages have teams which vie against one another for local trophies. Sailing races are also big in the Cook Islands along with netball and soccer.

Shopping is fantastic out here especially for the enthusiastic shopaholic. Items ranging from Tangaroa figures to rito hats, woven pandanus, pates (slit drums) and Tokis (adzes) can be found being sold all over the place. Also known for its shell and pearl jewelry, perhaps the most famous item you can purchase in the Cook Islands are tivaevae, which are intricately sewn colorful blankets and bedspreads.
