Caving on Mangaia
The most popular activity on Mangaia has to be spelunking. Caving on Mangaia is fantastic as there are a number of caves found all over the island. These caves are found in the makatea and are very dramatic and beautiful with many fascinating stalactite and stalagmite features. The perfect adventure for those who don’t mind closed confined spaces, caving here is not for the faint of heart.
The best cave on Mangaia to tour has to be the Te Rua Rere, located near the Tava’enga Swamp. A spectacular cave, the Te Rua Rere, which literally means jump, is a burial cave that was discovered by Tuaratua George and Robert Dean Frisbie in the 1930’s. The reason behind this burial cave being called Te Rua Rere or jump is because you have to jump down into the opening of the cave. As you head down, you will come across numerous tree roots before you enter through a muddy opening. Be sure to get a torch and wear insect repellent as there are plenty of mosquitoes out here.
The inside of the cave is very dramatic with high ceilings; however, the path is quite narrow. As you go deeper into the cave, you will notice many interesting rock formations and crystalline stalactites and stalagmites. Down here you will also find some human skeletons. The cave goes on for at least 2 km, though not many people go that deep. To explore this cave Tuara George has a one tour for around NZ$ 20.
There are some other caves on Mangaia as well and if you wish to explore them, it is best to find a tour guide. Ora Peraua offers excursions to a Puru burial cave known as Toru. The Mangaia Lodge and Aramoana Bungalows also take their guests for cave tours. To explore some more caves, visit the tourism office near Oneroa for details and maps.
