Places to See on Mangaia

Places to See on Mangaia

Although Mangaia is among the largest of the Cook Islands in terms of land area, there are not too many places to see out here. A very beautiful island, much of Mangaia’s appeal lies in the fact that this island is less touristy and more natural. Here you will find rich green agricultural valleys to wander through and sheer stunning cliffs to climb. Sparsely populated as well, Mangaia is ideal if you don’t mind roughing it a bit on your vacation.

While you are on Mangaia, the old Cook Islands Christian Churches are definitely worth checking out in the towns of Ivirua, Oneroa and Tamarua. Dating back to the 1820’s these churches were built in the time of the Rarotongan preacher Maretu, who played a big role in bringing Christianity to the island. The CICC in Tamarua is very pretty with some excellent woodcarvings. There are numerous marae on Mangaia as well, found all over the island. Many are difficult to find as they are not used nowadays, so contact the tourism office here for some help.

Rangimotia is the highest point on Mangaia and is worth climbing. A high plateau, here you are offered some truly stunning views of the surrounding landscape, so don’t forget to bring your camera for the perfect picture. The best way to get up to Rangimotia is from Oneroa, which has a dirt road that takes you straight up to the summit of the plateau.

There are countless pretty beaches on Mangaia, where you can relax and enjoy the beauty around you. However, none of these are good for swimming as the reef is too shallow. For some good swimming, head to the wharf at Avarua Landing, Oneroa. Tuaati Beach on the southwest of the island has some lovely snorkeling opportunities. You can also go swimming in Lake Tiriara, which is the only lake on Mangaia.

Another place to see on Mangaia are the taro plantations that are found here. Verdant and green, these plantations are a wonderful sight with their intricate waterways.
