Manikhiki Atoll Island
The Manihiki Atoll is perhaps one of the most well-known atolls
in the Northern Group of the Cook Islands.
Some 1203 km northwest of Rarotonga, Manihiki is considered by many
as one of the most gorgeous atolls in the South Pacific Ocean. Made
up of 40 smaller islands,
all of which lie in an enclosed lagoon, this atoll is just 5.4 sq
km in size. The main reason why the Manihiki Atoll is so recognized
is because of the beautiful black pearls that are farmed here and
exported throughout the world.
The main village on Manihiki is Tauhunu, which lies in the west of the atoll. A narrow long island, the Manihiki airstrip is also located out here. Badly devastated by Cyclone Martin in November 1997, Tauhunu is now rebuilding itself slowly from scratch. A hospital and the Manihiki administration center can also found on Tauhunu. Tukao is the second most important village in the Manihiki Atoll and is home to the departure airstrip, telecom office and a health clinic.
According to the Cook Islands
legend, this atoll was initially connected to Rakahanga
and was fished out from the sea by the god Maui. Fought for by a Rarotongan
named Huku, Rakahanga and Manihiki were split up into the islands
they are today. The first modern-day explorer credited for discovering
this beautiful atoll is US Captain Patrickson of the Good Hope in
1822.
When you visit Manihiki you will be pleasantly surprised to find that the accommodations are quite good. There are also a number of things to do out here as well. The Manihiki Guesthouse and the Manihiki Lagoon Lookout, both offer comfortable modern accommodations with meals and tours. Located in the villages of Tauhunu and Tukao respectively, these resorts are ideal for families and children as well.
Aside from visiting the pearl farms in Manihiki, some other activities you can enjoy out here include snorkeling, swimming, fishing and diving in the lagoon.
To get to Manihiki, Air Rarotonga flies here once a week from
Rarotonga. A four hour flight,
the journey is pleasant with some lovely views of the atoll from your
plane. You can also get to Manihiki by boat from Rarotonga, with transfers
to the Rakahanga Atoll as well.
